Nintendo DSi

All right, readers. As you guys should know, I'm a huge Nintendo fanboygirl. So me posting this is inevitable. ;)

Original Source

The newest iteration of the Nintendo DS, the Dsi, has come out of hiding! The company's new handheld gets a 17% bigger screen (measuring in at 3.25 inches), a .3 megapixel camera, an SD memory card slot, and “audio enhancements” like the ability to listen to mp3s, adjust pitch and playback.

The DSi will also feature built-in browsers and a DSi shop. Pricing categories at the shop for DsiWare include Free, 200 points, 500 points, and a “Premium” 800 points. New DSi owners will get 1000 points to spend at the DSi Shop before March 2010.
Now, that sounds awesome, right? But let's look in-depth.

the battery life is significantly lower and it's no longer backwards compatible with GBA titles
K, now that sucks. I for one like to take my handheld devices for long trips and losing 1-6 hours of battery life is a lot for me. But with the addition of a camera, I can tell that Nintendo will be brewing up some more games that already utilize the innovative touch screen. Will I buy it? Hell yeah... but maybe after the first price drop. More info when it comes!

iPhone Takes Screenshots of Everything You Do

"Well this isn’t creepy at all. Making matters worse…there doesn't seem to be any way to prevent it from doing this.

If you've got an iPhone, pretty much everything you have done on your handset has been temporarily stored as a screenshot that hackers or forensics experts could eventually recover, according to a renowned iPhone hacker who exposed the security flaw in a webcast Thursday."

AMD issues dramatic price cuts for triple-core CPUs

"Sunnyvale (CA) – AMD’s triple-core Phenom X3 processor was designed as the firm’s answer to Intel’s 45 nm Core 2 Duo CPUs and as a buffer to protect the tray prices of its quad-core Phenom X4 models. However, since the launch in April, AMD has cut Phenom X3 prices nearly in half since their launch in March and has repositioned the chips to compete with Intel’s entry-level Core 2 Duos and dual-core Pentiums, which are mainly used for desktop PCs with prices of $500 and below. Bargain hunters could find the X3 increasingly appealing – there is a new chip targeted at overclockers and two new low-power models.

AMD’s recent product and market strategy leaves us scratching our heads. On one side, the company has a clear problem to keep average selling prices of its processors at high levels. On the other, it cuts the prices of what might have been the company’s arguably most important chips this year at unprecedented levels. The current pace of price cuts is unusual and makes us wonder whether AMD has enough 65 nm production efficiency to enable these price cuts or if the company has more channel and retail problems than we know of.

Today’s price for X3 processors cut is the second within two weeks. AMD now has four regular (95 watt) triple-core processors. The X3 8450 runs for $104 (down from $125 in July), the X3 8650 for $119 (down from $145), the X3 8750 for $129 (down from $175) as well as the new X3 8750 Black Edition with overclocking support, which is priced at $134. Pricegrabber.com average retail price data suggests that the lowest retail prices for AMD triple-core processors are within 5% of AMD’s tray prices.

Also new are 65 watt X3 8450e and 8250e processors with undisclosed prices.

A quick look at Intel’s price sheet reveals that AMD decided to price its X3 processors at the very low-end of Intel’s Core 2 Duo range. The 8450 is priced right between Intel’s budget 45 nm dual-core E5200 ($84) and the regular Core 2 Dup lineup, which begins at $113. AMD’s X2 dual-core CPUs are priced between $66 for the 5000+ version and $92 for the 6000+ model.

There is no doubt that AMD’s triple-cores are bargains in today’s PC market. According to Hot Hardware, a 2.4 GHz X3 8750 is outperformed by a Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0 GHz by just 6%. However, the X3 sells for $129, while the E6850 runs for $183, according to Intel’s latest processor price sheet.

If you are looking for a mainstream PC and have to stay within a certain budget, it might be a good idea to closely watch PCs with these processors."

Sony: Blu-Ray Is the Last Optical Disc Format

"A representative from Sony said during an interview that Blu-ray may easily be the last and final optical disc format. Sony did not admit that physical media for content will be gone in a decade or even less from now, quite opposite, the firm believes that further incarnations of Blu-ray will allow the technology to live quite a long life.

“Blu-Ray is the final format for the optical disc. We don’t have a shorter laser. In the future, if we have a physical media format, it will change physically. It won’t look like an optical disc. I don’t know what sort of technology we will have in the future,” he said, “but while using lasers and optical discs, this is the final format,” said Taka Miyama, Sony’s product strategy manager for home video marketing in Europe, reports Electricpig web-site.

Currently Blu-ray disc offers more than enough capacity for modern movies: up to 50GB of information on a single optical disc allows studios to record both high-definition movie in 1920x1080 resolution as well as additional content on a single medium. But consumers and content creators may want to add something new even to Blu-ray: more interactive features or even stereoscopic 3D, which will require more storage space. Moreover, some companies already experiment with so-called Super Hi-Vision video technology, which enables up to 7680x4320 resolution and requires a lot of storage space due to extremely high bit-rate: 180Mb/s – 600Mb/s (22.5MB/s – 75MB/s), up from 40Mb/s on Blu-ray.

Currently Sony is optimistic about Blu-ray since companies like Pioneer and TDK are working hard to enable higher capacities on the standard, which is likely to guarantee long life for the format.

“I’ve seen prototypes for 400GB discs,” he said. “That’s approaching half a terabyte. If you went to 4K (twice the resolution of full HD), Blu-Ray is still big enough for a full movie. If it’s enough, then there’s no need to do any more development,” said Sony’s chief technical advisor for home audio and video, Eric Kingdon.

There is a dilemma for Sony and Blu-ray disc association, the organization that oversees further development of the standard: on the one hand, both need to ensure that the currently available Blu-ray incarnation will have a long life and consumers will not be forced to upgrade their players or content, on the other hand, the Blu-ray disc promoters need to stay one step ahead of services that rent or sell high-definition videos via the Internet, which also means constant improving of quality and consequently the standard."
